Principal's Message

Dr. Christopher Ikeanyi, Principal

Welcome to Grant Elementary School! Home of the Tigers!

This 2016-2017 school year promises to be unique and memorable for students and entire School Learning Community. It is a time for diving deeper into teaching and learning of our core instructional focuses of reading, writing, mathematic, and 21st Century competencies. We continue to emphasize the three R’s – Reading, Writing and Arithmetic at this early stage. We are committed to developing each student’s oral fluency and writing competency in the use of Standard Academic English. We will accomplish this objective through the following curricular programs here at Grant:

Write From the Beginning and Beyond (WFTBB) provides daily writing instruction and practice. For example, students have many opportunities to write and then articulate and discuss their writing during the Oral Rehearsal component as they work together to “take their writing off the Map.”

Interim Assessment Block (IAB) enables teachers to engage in effective instructional planning through the alignment of key Common Core State Standards focus with our core curriculum materials (My Math and Treasures), main formative assessments (district tests for K-grade 2, Interim Assessment Block for grade 3-6), Professional Development for teachers, and the annual Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.

• Accelerated Reader (AR) instills the joy of language, enhances vocabulary development and capacity, and exposes children to quality writing, which in turn develops quality writers.

I am excited to announce that Grant students, particularly 4th grade through 6th , are learning introductory computer programming skills with a program known as getCoding. This is in line with our school mission - to lay the foundation for students to succeed in becoming college and career ready for this 21st century.

Our School Learning Community also strives to support the development of good health habits of every Grant Elementary Student. This school year, we have partnered with Peoples for Park to make Grant School campus a Community School Park. This means that our campus is now open as a public park on Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. for members of the community to visit for fun recreational activities under the supervision of our support staff.

Finally, we are eager to continue with our diversity of multicultural and community building activities, including Winter Wonderland, Spring Fest and Summer Splash that have been instrumental in making Grant a safe, fun and welcoming place for our students, their families, and faculty/staff to thrive. Once again, welcome to another year of learning and growing together as a school family. It continues to a be a privilege of a lifetime to serve the scholars and champions of the Grant School community.

Respectfully,

Dr. Christopher Ikeanyi Principal
